“Adopting a Tiger” is the dream project being undertaken by Lions District 318A with the blessings of the Government of Kerala. Adoration of “Mother Earth” and an ardent desire to play our District’s role in the global “Save Earth” movement are the motivational factors that have inspired me to embark on this project. The richness of the variety in the natural habitat of plants and animals, and enrichment of bio-diversity of our planet are essential for the contented existence and safety of humanity. But unfortunately, the course of events world over does not paint a rosy picture. Dwindling of forests and insane aspects of urbanization and modernization has prompted environmentalists and social organizations to ring alarm bell. As of now, Tiger and Lions has been placed in the endangered category. According to “The International Union of Conservation of Forests” 132 species of plants and animals are on critically endangered list in India. India is home to the largest population of Tigers in the world. According to” Tiger Census”, wild tiger population in India declined by 60% from 1990 to 2008. It does not augur well if this ominous trend continues. Decrease in tiger population is attributed mainly to poaching and forest destruction. Though a major statistically concerted effort known as “Project Tiger” has been underway since 1973, it is yet to take a big leap. But, certainly it is time to think about the use of science and nanotechnology to ensure eco-friendly life. Environment care and awareness programs regarding protection of flora and fauna has been assigned due importance by Lions Clubs International apart from its conventional humanitarian activities. The fact that it is largest service organization in the world spreading over 207 countries and geographical areas with 1.35 million members, speaks volumes for its reach and strike rate. To contribute our share, District 318A, as its first venture of this sort has envisaged the project “Adoption of a Tiger”. Notably it has symbolic significance and is reflective of our patriotic feelings, as Tiger is our National Animal. I believe, the adoption of Tiger, Rahul, from Trivandrum Zoo, will create a great impact on our people to love animals and stand for the cause of animal rights and conservation. And I strongly believe this will lead to many innovative and creative thoughts. We place on record our sincere gratitude and deep appreciation for the support extended by the Government of Kerala and, especially, the Museum and Zoo authorities of Thiruvananthapuram. ‘Nature never did betray The heart that loved her’ (Wordsworth)
